" Lately, the Jacksonville Public Library's reach has extended well past city limits. Staffer Kema DeSagrada recently recruited several colleagues to participate in BookCrossing.com, an online book lovers community.
What exactly is BookCrossing.com?
"The whole idea is to pass a book along and see how many people around the world read it and are impacted by it," said Becky Jones, senior teen librarian and BookCrossing.com member.
A hybrid of an online book club and a blog, BookCrossing.com invites members to share books with strangers around the world. Private message (PM)

• C'est une invention géniale. Vous avez noté que bookcrossing vous a demandé votre adresse e-mail à l'inscription ? C'est pour le Private Messenger, et aussi pour vous avertir quand quelqu'un a trouvé un de vos livres. Si la personne A veut envoyer un PM à la personne B, elle va sur la BookShelf (étagère) de B, clique sur «Send B a private message» (sous le profil). Elle a alors une page où elle peut taper son message. Celui-ci est ensuite envoyé par le système sur l'adresse e-mail qu'a donné B, ce qui signifie que jamais A n'a eu connaissance de l'e-mail de B. B reçoit le message de A, et dans celui-ci le système a rajouté un lien « reply ». Il suffit à B de cliquer sur ce lien pour répondre à A, via le site, toujours sans connaître l'e-mail de la personne. Ceci permet d'éviter le spam, puisque personne n'a accès à l'e-mail de personne sans consentement. L'inconvénient, c'est qu'on ne peut envoyer qu'un PM à la fois. Si on veut envoyer le même message à plusieurs BCers, il faut faire des copier-coller.

Le rancard est fixé à 18 h 30. Devant l'église Saint-Eustache. Il faudra plus d'un quart d'heure de recherche pour repérer un petit groupe, bouquin à la main et sourires aux lèvres. Rien ne le différencie d'une bande d'amis ordinaires. ça papote, ça rigole. Ce qui réunit ces copains-là, c'est le bookcrossing, une immense chasse aux trésors qui s'est imposée en France (Libération du 6 novembre 2003) et dont le butin est à chaque fois un livre que quelqu'un a déposé(avec son adresse e-mail collée à l'intérieur) au hasard de ses promenades. Une fois qu'il a lu l'ouvrage, le «découvreur» le dépose à son tour, participant ainsi à un vaste réseau d'échange gratuit"...
